O beautiful for patriot dream, That sees beyond the years. Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears. America, America, God shed His grace on thee, And crown the good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea. HOME ON THE RANGE Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam, Where the deer and the antelope play, Where seldom is heard a discouraging word. And the skies are not cloudy all day. Chorus: Home, home on the range, Where the deer and the antelope play, Where seldom is heard a discouraging word. And the skies are not cloudy all day. HAVE THINE OWN WAY LORD 1 Have thine own way. Lord have thine own way; Thou art the Potter, I am the clav, Mould me and make me, after Thy will. While I am waiting, yielded and still. 2 Have thine own way, Lord, have thine own way, Search me and try me, Master today, Whiter than snow. Lord, wash me just now. As in Thy. presence, humbly I bow. 3 Have thine own way, Lord, have thine own way, Wounded and weary, help me I pray, Power, all power, surely is Thine, Touch me and heal me, Saviour divine.",

"transcription": "To the Present and Former Leaders and Members of the Worlds Alliance of Young Mens Christian Associations and Worlds Young Womens Christian Association: The word of Holy Scripture chosen to govern the thought of our membership throughout the world is one of timeliness, of conscience-quickening power and of great reassurance: \"\"When Thy judgments are abroad in the eartb the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. \"\"Judgments in what sense? Judgments in the negative sense that the just and holy God in visiting upon us the sins of omission and commission of ourselves and of our ancestors; and, thank God, judgments in the positive sense that the Loving Heavenly Father is brooding over His vast human family, evoking aspirations, hopes and purposes for something fairer and freer, something more truly Christlike, than anything which lies behind us. Reflect upon the significance of both this Divine and this human action. What a teacher! the Almighty, the Eternal, the Unerring, the Creative, the All-Merciful, the All-Loving God. What a school! \"\"the inhabitants of the world. What lessons! in a time of global tragedy. \"\"Learn righteousness. Notice that it does not say should learn righteousness but learn righteousness. In other words, the world-wide conditions and the Divine action are such that multitudes are in an attitude so chastened and humbled that they can truly learn and heed what Christ placed as the front-line lesson when He enjoined: \"\"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. What limitless opportunity this opens before usan opportunity such as we have never before knownto gain a clear sense of direction, an overpowering sense of mission, and an inspiring and deeply-satisfying sense of companionship both human and Divine. JOHN R. MOTT President of the World's Alliance of Young Mens Christian Associations Seven Eternal Certainties have been chosen for our meditation this week. It is for us, day by day, alone and together, to learn how to take hold of them as they are reaffirmed to us by the \"\"still, small voice of God. All other voices combine to shout down these eternal certaintiesthe roar of machinery, the crash of bombs, the clash of political and civil strife, the cries of the smitten. But though shouted down, the voice is not silenced for those who know how to tune in on the receiving set till the point is reached where all other sounds are cut out, and it is heard in its compelling might. But hearing is not enough; satisfaction with clearness of perception is not enough; there must be the commitment that is ready to take risks. As soon as other voices crash in again they ridicule our certainties, and every probability is on their side. Peter the fisherman admitted all this: \"\"Master, we have toiled all night and taken nothing; but staking deliberately on an eternal certainty he added, \"\"Nevertheless, at Thy word I will let down the net. A thousand times during our Week of Prayer and Fellowship a \"\"nevertheless, at Thy word, I will, uttered however tremblingly, will register a decision in some matter great or small, public or personal, which will have world-changing quality, because it is a sheer venture on the eternal certainties, on the Eternal CertaintyGod. Isaiah 26: 9 Read Amos 5: 24; Psalm 145: 17-18; Matthew 5: 20; Hebrews 12: 5-8. \"\"This is Gods world. The working out of History is the working out of His purpose in it. Gradually there is breaking through our complacent sense of self-sufficiency the awareness that Gods will is being accomplished even in our failure. As surely as we seek to act in defiance of His law, we experience the devastating destruction, physical, moral and spiritual, with which we are becoming ever more familiar. An International Group, U.S.A. \"\"Should any man be unwilling to submit to the divine will and rule, yet he cannot escape from it, for where he would escape from under the will that commands, he does but rush under the will that punishes. -St. Anselm \"\"This war is a judgment pronounced upon the whole world, upon the Church, and upon every Christian. The judgment of God always comes upon us in the present, and calls us to repentance and to definite obedience. We must take care not to seek to escape from this judgment by hiding ourselves in plans for the future, and by building an imaginary new order for after the war. There is a danger that we may dream of a future state governed by Christian principles, and not listen to the word that God wants to say to us today, with all the immediate and concrete necessities which result from it. An International Group, France \"\"We approach God not only as our Creator and Ruler but also as our Father. He is not indifferent; He cares. He is not only a God of judgment; He is a Father with mercy and compassion. Therefore, we approach Him not only in fear, but also in confidence. Roswell P. Barnes, U. S. A. \"\"I am not unmindful that in the kind of world in which we live, the innocent suffer while the ungodly prosper and seem not to be troubled as other men. How, then, can the God of judgment reign? The answer, in part, is found in the fact that whether or not I desire it to be so, I am my brother's keeper. My brother gains from my goodness, suffers from my sin. Georgia Harkness, U. S. A. 4",

Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers, whose flaming editorials in days gone by had proclaimed their love of freedom, but they, like the universities, were silenced in a few short weeks. ... I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. I am forced thus to confess that what I once despised I now praise unreservedly. Albert Einstein, U. S. J. Austin Chairman Dr. Leroy Morris Co-Chairman For many years, Negroes of Trenton have looked forward to the day when they would have an adequate city center for recreational, educational, religious and health activities. This Spring we have an opportunity to realize this ambition by raising among ourselves $15,000 for the purchase of a modern building on Fowler Street, ideally suited for these purposes. When the money is obtained and possession taken of the building, it will be known as Carver Center, in honor of the late George Washington Carver, famed Negro scientist. Carver Center will serve young and old. Flere our children will have, under wise adult guidance, clubs, classes and play groups. For older Negroes it will be a pleasant meeting place for large groups gathering for entertainment, cultural and religious projects. Negro war workers will find at Carver Center the recreation they so greatly need, while Negro soldiers will be offered many helpful services and amusements. Although an option has been obtained on the Fowler Street building, Carver Center is still a dream. It will become a reality only when all of the $15,000 required to buy and equip it is in hand. That presents to every Negro in Trenton an opportunity, a challenge and a duty to give to the limit of his or her ability. The sum we must have is large. Our donations must be large also. That means more generous giving than has been the custom of our people. Every colored resident of the city will be asked to give to this cause through a house to house canvas, appeals to workers in industry and requests to Negroes in prosperous circumstances for special gifts. Plan your gift now, so that when you are approached you will be ready to do your part to make Carver Center a proud achievement of the colored people of Trenton. H. J. AUSTIN, M.D., Chairman, Carver Center Co-ordinating Committee.",

"transcription": "Formerly the home of the Colored Elks of Trenton, the building on Fowler Street on which an option has been obtained, meets all requirements of a community center. Modern in design, of brick construction, it has two stories and a well finished basement. On the main floor is a large comfortable lounge which will serve as a general meeting place, information center and which can be used also for certain types of entertainment. On the opposite side of the lounge is a series of smaller rooms suitable for offices for the staff, for conference and committee rooms. Adjoining the lounge is a library where books and magazines will be available, where classes may be held and lectures given. In the rear of the main floor is an auditorium-gymnasium. This will be used for large group meetings, for motion pictures, dramatics, concerts, educational, social and religious programs. As a gymnasium it provides facilities for basketball, volley ball and other athletic events. Three large rooms on the second floor are adapted for crafts shops, one for boys, another for girls, and for a game room, with ping pong and pool tables for older age groups The basement, with a separate entrance and with shower baths, can be utilized during the war as a social hall and later, when the war is ended, as a play room. At the present time there are no such facilities for Negroes in Trenton. The long existing need for such a center is now greatly increased by the war which has created for the Negro, no less than for the white American, new and pressing social problems. Purchased with financial contributions of the Negroes of the city, and with yearly memberships Carver Center will be a symbol of the desire of the colored population to develop their own resources and to continue as useful, constructive citizens of the community, making their social, cultural and economic contribution to the betterment of Trenton. Carver Center will serve the entire colored population of Trenton and will be offered to the Y. M. C. A. for operation. Its importance for Negro boys and girls cannot be overestimated. Growing up amid the excitements of war, deeply affected by the dislocation of their homes, due to fathers being called into the armed forces, and mothers into various kinds of employment, our children, without wise guidance and kindly, intelligent supervision, may become the most tragic casualties of this world wide conflict. At Carver Center there will be organized clubs, societies and play groups managed by the children themselves, with adult assistance. Through these groups, our youth will learn the processes of living together harmoniously in a democratic society. In craft shops they will acquire those skills that will carry over not only into the mature business of living but will open up useful, enjoyable leisure time activities. Through such programs, also, their energy, initiative and resourcefulness will be channeled into service for othersindividuals, the community, the state. Youths legitimate desire for recreation will here be given a wholesome direction. For those who especially enjoy athletics, leagues for basketball, volley ball and other sports will be organized. Opportunities for self expression through dramatics, music, the dance and creative arts will be provided. For mature Negroes, Carver Center will be a meeting place for large groups for recreational, educational and religious projects. In the Center will be facilities for carrying on an extended health program and young men about to be called into the military service of their country will be given pre-induction and physical fitness courses to prepare them for their new careers. Choral and other musical groups will be developed. Boys and girls bands will have adequate space for practice and for concerts. So long as the war lasts, Carver Center will offer to Negro war workers the relaxation and entertainment so needed by those who spend long hours in industry turning out guns, planes, ships and ammunition, and to men in military service, the social and recreational activities that contribute to their happiness and adjustment. It will cost $15,000 to purchase and equip Carver Center. This money is to be raised before June 1, by means of a city-wide campaign among the colored people. In addition to a special gifts committee seeking large contributions from well-to-do Negroes, there will be an industrial division and seventeen Neighborhood divisions whose members will make a house-to-house canvas for funds. Establishment of Carver Center is the responsibility of every Negro in Trenton. The money for it can be obtained only if each and every colored person makes some donation to the oiuse. These may be cash gifts or pledges for two or more payments to be paid before June ^ 6",
