Immigrant Stories is a research and archiving project run by the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota. Immigrant Stories helps immigrants, refugees, and their family members create digital stories: brief videos with images, text, and audio about a personal experience.
\n\nThis project defines \"immigrant\" broadly. Our collection contains digital stories from people living outside their country of birth as well as stories created by their children and grandchildren. Immigrant Stories also welcomes stories from international students, international adoptees, and people who do not feel that their stories fit a particular, or just one, category. All stories are important, and we invite you to make a video and share yours with us.

I was born in Mae Ra Moe refugee camp in Thailand. In 2011 my mom applied to\ncome to the U.S to look for new opportunities. A month later we got a permission slip that said we can go to\nthe U.S. On our way to the airport we had to carry an IOM bag that the staff gave us. When we were on the\nbus the whole thing was quiet. No one was talking. After we got off the bus we had to walk like 5 minutes to\nthe airport. My family didn't know how to speak Thai so it was difficult for us. We didn't know where to go\nand the security called an interpreter for us that could speak Burmese. When the interpreter arrived my mom\nstarted to ask him where to go. He had a conversation with my mom, and then he told us to run to the\nairport.\nMaybe we didn’t have much time left. And he ran too. I wondered why didn't he wait for us. My mom’s shoe\nfell off and she couldn't run anymore. I knew my mom was exhausted, so I ran as fast as I can to catch the\ninterpreter guy. I tried to tell him my mom was exhausted, but he yelled at me to keep running. I pulled his\nhand and grabbed his shirt and showed him where my mom was. With a loud and nervous voice I told him,\n“Do you not see her? She cannot run anymore!” But he just turned back around and started to run again. He\ndidn't give a damn about us at all0.\nWe tried to walk slowly for our mother so she wouldn’t feel dizzy and exhausted. Fortunately we still got on\nthe plane on time. When the plane went up I felt like I'm in a peaceful world because there was nothing\naround me. I didn’t have to worry about people who was not helpful to me.\nWhen we arrived to Minnesota on the first night, I felt like I wanted to go back to Thailand because I left a\nlot of things behind like my best friend and my dog. When I started to realize that I couldn't go back, I\ndecided to build my American dream here in the United States. I started to go to school and meet a lot of\npeople. Some of them are dissimilar for me, but we get along very well. I know I can make friends without\ndifficulty, even though whose languages I didn't know how to speak. Now I'm very proud of myself that I get\nto talk about my journey and I am [inaudible].\nAs you can see, I'm in eleventh grade without worries for a single thing. I'm ready for anything that comes\nalong.", "kaltura_video": "1_hbc6nanm", "page_count": 0, "record_type": "primary", "first_viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "attachment": "228.pdf", "attachment_format": "pdf", "document_type": "item", "featured_collection_order": 999, "date_added": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_added_sort": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_modified": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "_version_": 1710337982985142272, "type": "Moving Image", "collection": "p16022coll554", "is_compound": false, "parent_id": "17", "thumb_url": "https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/1369852/thumbnail/entry_id/1_hbc6nanm", "thumb_cdn_url": "https://dkp5i0hinw9br.cloudfront.net/5f995f53db6e73b1c54a2cc74e70adc66843b54e.png", "children": [ ] }
