Immigrant Stories is a research and archiving project run by the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota. Immigrant Stories helps immigrants, refugees, and their family members create digital stories: brief videos with images, text, and audio about a personal experience.
\n\nThis project defines \"immigrant\" broadly. Our collection contains digital stories from people living outside their country of birth as well as stories created by their children and grandchildren. Immigrant Stories also welcomes stories from international students, international adoptees, and people who do not feel that their stories fit a particular, or just one, category. All stories are important, and we invite you to make a video and share yours with us.

It is only a small town, but\nit is a place that gave me some specific presents such as the love of nature, the love of family,\nand the love of friendship. All of these are kept carefully in my mind until now.\nI also have an old cheap present, my old bracelet, from my grandmother. I always keep\nit carefully, and it had a special influence on my life when I came in Minnesota.\nMy bracelet is the stone light red color. It is very old. I have had it about 16 years. It was\na present from my grandma when I passed a high school examination with the highest score. It's\nnot an expensive present, but I like so much because of its color and its meaning.\nFurthermore, she always helps the elderly, the homeless. She was always with me, gave me\nadvice, and showed me what should I do when I had problems. Her behavior influenced my\nthinking, and my decisions in life awhenI grew up. That is the reason why I always keep my\nbracelet with me, wherever I go, and whatever I do.\nIn 2008, I married and four years later, I came to Minnesota. At first living in the United\nStates everything was so different. I felt nervous because I couldn’t go anywhere by myself, or\ncommunicate with others in English. I also miss my home so much. At that time, my grandma\nphoned and convinced me not to give up. She said the beginning is not always\neasy. The more I\ntry, the more successful I will be.\nUntil now, I have been living in Minnesota for three years. I have a small happy family\nwith my husband and my little daughter. I have also studied at Saint Paul College. I think it is a\ngood chance for me to practice my English, especially to get certificate to find a better job in the\nfuture.\nNow, my grandma is too old to remember everything. I wish I had a chance to go back to\nmy home to visit her. I will wear this bracelet forever even though it is old, has no value as gold\nor silver. It reminds me the love of my grandmother, and how I get faith in my life especially\nhere in Minnesota.\nWhen I was a child, my parents often went far away for their work, so my grandmother\ntook care of me. Her name is Ba Tran. She is an honest and independent person with an\noptimistic outlook. She never gives up and tries her best to solve her problem.", "kaltura_video": "1_iakukuuy", "page_count": 0, "record_type": "primary", "first_viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "attachment": "67.pdf", "attachment_format": "pdf", "document_type": "item", "featured_collection_order": 999, "date_added": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_added_sort": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_modified": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "_version_": 1710348538323402753, "type": "Moving Image", "collection": "p16022coll554", "is_compound": false, "parent_id": "221", "thumb_url": "https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/1369852/thumbnail/entry_id/1_iakukuuy", "thumb_cdn_url": "https://dkp5i0hinw9br.cloudfront.net/5e86c15eeb849a7952cc01d29f8ee9af1a80d65e.png", "children": [ ] }
