Immigrant Stories is a research and archiving project run by the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota. Immigrant Stories helps immigrants, refugees, and their family members create digital stories: brief videos with images, text, and audio about a personal experience.
\n\nThis project defines \"immigrant\" broadly. Our collection contains digital stories from people living outside their country of birth as well as stories created by their children and grandchildren. Immigrant Stories also welcomes stories from international students, international adoptees, and people who do not feel that their stories fit a particular, or just one, category. All stories are important, and we invite you to make a video and share yours with us.

We\nlived in peace but there was no hope. Not enough money to make in the\ncamp and not enough education. It was a black hole at night when you\nwanted to find the road. We started packing things up to go to America\nwhere we could afford enough money and the children could get more\neducated. In America we would have hope and happiness.\nI remember getting up on the truck full of people and crying, leaving\nfamily and loved ones behind. I came with my mom, dad and three older\nsisters. I do not know what I left behind because I was young. I\nremember the last time I hung out with my friends but I was ready for\nmy new life in America. The road was muddy and hard on the way to\nThailand. In Thailand, we got new shirts, pants and shoes. I felt\nfresh and rich. We stayed in a hotel in Thailand for a night and the\nnext morning it was time to go on a plane. My heart was racing fast. I\nwas so excited and felt like I was in heaven.\nThe plane was the worst part of my journey. The sound of the plane was\ndizzying and I was so dizzy and I threw up on the way to U.S.A. Things\nchanged, I still don’t miss Thailand that much for being a tiny\ncommunity. In Minnesota there is a lot of food and money.\nI started my new life here in St.Paul. Life in U.S.A. was hard at\nfirst but we got used to it and it was a good country to live in.\nGoing to school for the first day was fun, but I did not understand\nwhat other kids were talking about. I felt stupid and embarrassed when\nI didn’t know how to speak English. I got a good lunch and loved the\nschool. Years went by I had to move to four different schools. I have\nbeen doing a lot of things. The city was bright and the road was wide\nand clear. Living in St. Paul is hard, the weather is cold and very\nhot in different months. I had to go through all those years just to\nget to used to my new life. I always had to go to appointments to get\nchecked. Every clinic smells medicinal. Years went by I get used to\nthis new stuff. I enjoy living in U.S.A. and hope to have success in\nthe future.", "kaltura_video": "1_bvd34785", "page_count": 0, "record_type": "primary", "first_viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "attachment": "22.pdf", "attachment_format": "pdf", "document_type": "item", "featured_collection_order": 999, "date_added": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_added_sort": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_modified": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "_version_": 1710348538412531712, "type": "Moving Image", "collection": "p16022coll554", "is_compound": false, "parent_id": "320", "thumb_url": "https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/1369852/thumbnail/entry_id/1_bvd34785", "thumb_cdn_url": "https://dkp5i0hinw9br.cloudfront.net/7326cf79bd423305ebc635dceceffbeb2bf692c9.png", "children": [ ] }
