Immigrant Stories is a research and archiving project run by the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota. Immigrant Stories helps immigrants, refugees, and their family members create digital stories: brief videos with images, text, and audio about a personal experience.
\n\nThis project defines \"immigrant\" broadly. Our collection contains digital stories from people living outside their country of birth as well as stories created by their children and grandchildren. Immigrant Stories also welcomes stories from international students, international adoptees, and people who do not feel that their stories fit a particular, or just one, category. All stories are important, and we invite you to make a video and share yours with us.

When I was in\nelementary my dad was questioned by ICE. ICE had came in my house for\nnothing . As soon as they got in they immediately arrested my dad. At\nfirst I was so confused. I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t\neven know who were these random strangers who were putting handcuffs\non my dad. They told us and my mom that they were gonna go take out my\ndad to question him. 10 minutes passed and we didn't see anything\nexcept for the dark empty streets. My dad was taken by ICE.\nMy dad was at jail for at least a week. The police were asking\nhim many question. The police asked how long have you lived here. Are\nyou legal or an immigrant. The Police thought my dad was a criminal\nthat they were looking for. The guy they were looking for had tattoos\nand my dad doesn't even have a single tattoo. Then took my dad to\nprison even though he served a week in jail. I had to go visit my dad\nfor for 30 minutes and we talked with him. As soon as the computer\nscreen hit 5 seconds, it turned black. We had to go to our neighbor to\nask him to sign this document to prove that my dad has lived here more\nthan 25 years. He signed the papers and said he was so sorry that this\nhappened to us. It was just something hurts us but we made it through\nit easily. Me and my brother had to stay for a week at my aunt’s while\nmy mom went out of her way to take a plane from here Minnesota to\nTexas. Once my mom plane landed she knew what she had to do. She knew\nthat she had to rent a car and go drive my dad to pick him up at the\nborder. My mom and dad were reunited and my dad promised to bring me\nback a dog and he actually did bring me my dog. My mom and dad had to\ndrive from all the way from Texas to Minnesota. As soon as they got\nhere, they had to pick up me and my brother from school. As soon we\ngot in the car, I seen my new dog.", "kaltura_video": "1_axm3fk01", "page_count": 0, "record_type": "primary", "first_viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "attachment": "29.pdf", "attachment_format": "pdf", "document_type": "item", "featured_collection_order": 999, "date_added": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_added_sort": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_modified": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "_version_": 1710348538429308928, "type": "Moving Image", "collection": "p16022coll554", "is_compound": false, "parent_id": "339", "thumb_url": "https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/1369852/thumbnail/entry_id/1_axm3fk01", "thumb_cdn_url": "https://dkp5i0hinw9br.cloudfront.net/523e01c6ce3fbd7c8fffa14ac07e111a6639e274.png", "children": [ ] }
