Immigrant Stories is a research and archiving project run by the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota. Immigrant Stories helps immigrants, refugees, and their family members create digital stories: brief videos with images, text, and audio about a personal experience.
\n\nThis project defines \"immigrant\" broadly. Our collection contains digital stories from people living outside their country of birth as well as stories created by their children and grandchildren. Immigrant Stories also welcomes stories from international students, international adoptees, and people who do not feel that their stories fit a particular, or just one, category. All stories are important, and we invite you to make a video and share yours with us.

Although we all made it here we all had completely\ndifferent experiences because we came at different times. I came with\none of my sisters but leaving Iran wasn't too difficult for me because\nalthough we always made the best of what we had, the corrupt\ngovernment system was still a huge disadvantage to living a healthy\nlife. Especially being a woman, I wouldn't have the rights I have out\nhere back home, I wouldn't have the chance at an education or freedom.\nDespite the fact I was leaving friends and my family behind, I knew\nthat wherever my family was, everything would be ok and I also knew I\nwould have a better life in America with more opportunities and a\nbrighter future. So as soon as I got that green card, I felt like I\nwon the lottery. However before I actually got to America, I had to\nspend eight months in Pakistan, Karachi, in horrible conditions. To\nsay the least, let’s just say we didn't have clean water, good food or\na fridge, but we managed to make it work in hopes to get our visa\nwhich we did, and shortly after so did the rest of my siblings.\nWhen I got here, I didn't speak any English so me and my\nsisters all took classes, learned with other immigrants and also made\nfriends. I was pleasantly surprised of how nice the people were; they\nnever made fun of me and always tried to find a way to understand what\nI was saying. After learning English I felt pressured to fall in love\nand get married because I was 27 when I came here, and in our culture\nat that time I was late for that aspect of my life. I also knew I\nwanted kids and would be proud to raise them in a land of\nopportunities. Eventually, I found my husband, got married had two\nkids, traveled and enjoyed the freedom I knew I wouldn't have if I\ndidn't go through what I did and leave behind what I had to. I’m very\nhappy to say it was all worth it.\nThank you so much.", "kaltura_video": "1_kqhriqwz", "page_count": 0, "record_type": "primary", "first_viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "viewer_type": "kaltura_video", "attachment": "82.pdf", "attachment_format": "pdf", "document_type": "item", "featured_collection_order": 999, "date_added": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_added_sort": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "date_modified": "2021-01-26T00:00:00Z", "_version_": 1710337983020793856, "type": "Moving Image", "collection": "p16022coll554", "is_compound": false, "parent_id": "48", "thumb_url": "https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/1369852/thumbnail/entry_id/1_kqhriqwz", "thumb_cdn_url": "https://dkp5i0hinw9br.cloudfront.net/83c35180da91762de38c06aecfa8ffd8d9acb43b.png", "children": [ ] }
