Adam's father was born in Mexico and grew up in Los Angeles. His mother was born and raised in the Twin Cities. They met in Los Angeles in the 70's, where he and his brother were born. The family moved to Minnesota when he was still a baby. He has lived in Minnesota his entire life.

Aide Esthela Garcia was born in Mexico City, Mexico. She first came to Los Angeles, CA to visit her father. Nine months later, she moved to Minnesota. After working there for nine years, she began her studies at Century College in 2014.

Alfonso Tinoco was born in 1999 in Uriangato, Mexico. In 2012 he moved to the United States with his mother and father. After a short time in Missouri, the family moved to Ohio. Though he spent his first two years in ESL courses, Alfonso moved into AP English in his third year.

Elena Hernandez in Mexico in 1977. At the age of 19 she gave birth to her first daughter and travelled to the United States to live with her father using a relative's documents. Jose-Angel Lombera left Mexico at a young age to escape his impoverished conditions and seek new opportunities. The border crossing was harrowing and traumatic, and once in the States, he had to overcome a learning disability to learn English and adjust to the culture.
