Mount Hood, Oregon, between Rhododendron and Government Camp. Axe is in fossil stump exposed by Zigzag River in mudflow under Hemlock-Douglas fir forest, which is at least 150 years old. View upstream at 2900 feet altitude. Stump is probably Douglas fir, in place with bark attached and roots visible.

Elizabeth G. Lawrence rowing west on Spirit Lake toward a group of stumps in photo 58-8-19. The deepest stump in the narrowest part, between the two arms was in 58 feet of water. The trees were drowned about 1500 AD.
