This talk introduces a nonparametric framework for analyzing physiological sensor data collected from wearable devices. The idea is to apply the stochastic process notion of occupation times to construct activity profiles that can be treated as monotonically decreasing functional data. Whereas raw sensor data typically need to be pre-aligned bef...

We will survey different methods of proving functional inequalities for hypoelliptic diffusions and the corresponding heat kernels. Namely, some of these methods rely on the generalized curvature-dimension inequalities (due to Baudoin-Garofalo), and some use structure theory and a Fourier transform on Lie groups. For nilpotent groups, the latter...

Using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFTquantum-chemical methodologies, we investigate interplay of electronicproperties and conformational dynamics in several optically activematerials. In quantum dots we explore the role of surface ligands on theelectronic structure and observe strong surface-ligand interactions leadingto f...

An overarching goal of the Langlands program is the principle of functoriality, first formulated in the famous 1967 letter from Langlands to Weil. It roughly states that if the L-groups of two (reductive) groups are related then so are their automorphic spectrum. It has many important consequences including the Ramanujan conjecture for GL(n) as ...

Urban transportation services exhibit a number of fundamental characteristics that affect market structure as well as operations. These characteristics include economies of scale, the existence of multiple fixed points affecting customer waiting times, and imbalances in flows over short periods of time. The talk will explain these characteristic...

How strongly can electromagnetic radiation interact with a linear, passive scattering body? Here I show that passivity'the condition the polarization currents do no work'in conjunction with the optical theorem imposes convex constraints on the currents (real or effective) that can be excited in any scatterer, leading to general shape- and/or mat...

Organized in 1901 by Reverend C.T. Walker of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church as the Colored Men’s Branch, this branch first started in mid-Manhattan. It was later moved to the Harlem area and its name changed in 1919 to the One Hundred-Thirty Fifth Street Branch. In 1933 it opened a new building, and two years later took the name Harlem Branch...
