Parsimony, including sparsity and low rank, has been shown to successfully modeldata in numerous machine learning and signal processing tasks. Traditionally, suchmodeling approaches rely on an iterative algorithm that minimizes an objectivefunction with parsimony-promoting terms. The inherently sequential structure anddata-dependent complexity a...

With Braxton Osting, we have considered spectral optimization of point set configurations for adjacency matrices and graphs on two dimensional surfaces. We study both tori and spheres. I will discuss our results, show several numerical simulations and review open problems and interesting directions to take this line of research.

I will present two different half-talks. In the first section, I will focus on the ideas behind replica exchange molecular dynamics, with an emphasis on improving efficiency by optimizing the time between attempted exchanges in Monte Carlo. In the second half, I will present a peculiarity of Langevin thermostats, which could cause substantially ...

Oscillations of populations of neurons deep in the brain are thought to be responsible for some of the symptoms for Parkinson's Disease. Drugs and deep brain stimulation that re used to treat Parkinson's Disease suppress these oscillations. We have developed methods to measure how the oscillations are modulated by stimulation, to generate a phas...
