We consider the sparsity-promoting Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control fora network of linear systems. A sparse LQG controller requires fewer communication channelswith the networked system. The bidirectional communication implies that the column-block-sparsity pattern of the Kalman filter and the row-block-sparsity pattern of the state feed...

Since the discovery of the extraordinary optical transmission through nanohole arrays in metallic films by Ebbesen, a wealth of research has been sparked in the experimental and theoretical investigation of localized electromagnetic field enhancement in subwavelength nanostructures. This remarkable phenomenon can lead to potentially significant ...

Subwavelength apertures and holes on surfaces of metals induce strong electromagnetic field enhancement and extraordinary optical transmission. This remarkable phenomenon can lead to potentially significant applications in biological and chemical sensing, spectroscopy, and other novel optical devices. In this talk, I will present mathematical st...

The Fock operator, which appears in the widely used Hartree-Fock theory and Kohn-Sham density functional theory with hybrid exchange-correlation functionals, plays a central role modern quantum chemistry and materials science. The computational cost associated with the Fock exchange operator is however very high. In a simplified setting, the Har...

Many statistical learning problems can be formulated as convex optimization problems with a finite-sum structure. Such a structure has been leveraged by the stochastic variance reduced gradient (SVRG) method to reduce the computational complexity for finding the optimal solution. However, the implementation of SVRG method depends an unknown stro...
